What is a squint?

A squint medically known as strabismus is when one or both eyes are misaligned, the cause of a squint may vary. A thorough orthoptic assessment is required in order to determine the type and cause of the squint.

Does my child need to wear an eye patch?

After a thorough eye assessment by an eye specialist (orthoptist optometrist or ophthalmologist) if a diagnosis of amblyopia has been made, your child will then need to see an orthoptist, who will issue the appropriate treatment plan, which could involve wearing a patch for several hours everyday. 

What is Amblyopia and can it be corrected?

Amblyopia is reduced Vision in one or both eyes, despite thorough glasses wear, nil anomaly or defect to the visual pathway (brain) and the physical structure of the eye such as the retina (back of the eye) or the lens (front of the eye). It can be corrected via patching. All patients with amblyopia must see an orthoptist to advise the appropriate treatment plan.

What is An Orthoptist? 

An Orthoptist is someone who primarily specialises in the diagnosis and management of 'squints' or 'lazy eyes'. They work closely with ophthalmologist and optometrist (opticians) to reach an accurate diagnosis of an eye condition. 

What is the Difference between an Orthoptist and an Optician?

Opticians primarily deal with the prescribing of glasses and contact lens, and are trained to pick up defects in and around the eyes. Orthoptist mainly deal with how both eyes work together and interact with the brain to form one clear image. Orthoptist are also highly specialised in assessing vision in young children and anyone with special educational needs. You will mainly seen Opticians on the highstreet and Orthoptist mainly work in hospitals
